Affable Oscar-winning “Marty” actor dies

In real life Ernie Borgnine, who passed away July 8 at age 95, was nothing like “Sgt. Fatso Judson,” the brutal character he brilliantly portrayed in the 1953 classic “From Here to Eternity.” He was gentle, kind and had a good heart. Maybe that’s why he lived so long.

Years after the film Borgnine said people still berated him for killing “Maggio,” the character played by Frank Sinatra in his Oscar-winning comeback role. In real life he and Frank were friends.
